Shadow and Reality -a companion to a talk by Fr .Tom Hopko
Most people think worship means “going to church,”
singing songs, or sitting quietly while someone talks.
But what if worship is much bigger that that idea?
What if worship begins not with us trying to reach God…
but with God reaching toward us?
That changes the whole shebang.
Because the worship of God does not begin
with human creativity or religious ideas.
Worship begins with God Himself.
God creates. God speaks. God acts. And people respond.
That is the pattern all through Holy Scripture:
God acts—and His people answer.
Sometimes today people imagine worship is
something we invent to make us feel spiritual.
To elicit emotions and feelings.
But in Holy Scripture, worship is always a response
to what God has already done!
Think about it this way:
Before there was ever a Bible bound in leather…
before there were church buildings…
before there were worship teams or hymn books…
there were people encountering the living God.
And from that life of worship, the Scriptures were written. The Bible did not create worship.
The Holy Scripture bears witness to people already being drawn into relationship with God.
And all through the Old Testament,
God was teaching His people through signs,
sacrifices, temples, priests, and feasts.
But these were never the final reality.
They were shadows pointing forward to Christ.
Like a blueprint pointing to a house.
Or a trailer pointing to the full movie.
Real—but incomplete.
And then Christ arrives.
And suddenly all changes.
Because Jesus is not simply another priest or another teacher.
He is the fulfillment of all the Old Testament was pointing toward.
He is: the true High Priest, the true Sacrifice
and the true Temple where God and humanity meet.
The Letter to the Hebrews reveals Christ enters not into
a temple made by human hands,
but into heaven-God’s eternal Presence.
And He offers not animals or rituals—but Himself.
Once and for all.
Not because God loves suffering, but because in Christ,
God gives Himself completely for the life of the world.
So now the question becomes: How do the Church worship?
Do we invent something new? No.
We enter into what Christ has already done.
The worship is not made up or reimagined…
…is not religious theatre but is participation in the Life of God.
And this is why worship matters.
Because we are not simply gathering to “learn information about God.”
We are being drawn into communion with Him.
Drawn into His Life.
Drawn into His Love.
Drawn into His Kingdom.
Not coaxed or dragged into religious drama,
ever seeking new and novel ways of worshipping…
but drawn into Life.
And that is why the Church’s worship is not merely external,
but involves the whole person: our minds, our bodies, our voices,
our hearts, our relationships, our offering of ourselves back to God.
And in all of this, the Church worships the Holy Trinity.
The Father receives. The Son offers. The Holy Spirit makes us participants.
So, worship is not escape from reality
or enter into my or another person or groups reality.
Or that which seeks to make enjoyment for myself or others.
even if we/I think/feel God would like what has made up!
Worship is entering the deepest reality there is:
the Life of God Himself.
And perhaps that changes the way we think about “going to church”.
Maybe worship is not mainly about: “What did I get out of it?”
Maybe the deeper question is:
“Am I allowing myself to be drawn into the Life Christ is offering?”
Because in Christ, we are no longer living in shadows.
We are invited into reality.
And we are not dragged there.
We are drawn.
Questions for Reflection
When you hear the word “worship,” what comes to mind first?
Do you usually think of worship as something humans create for God… or as a response to what God has already done?
What distractions or fears keep people from entering deeply into worship today?
What might it mean that Christ is not dragging us into ever new expressions of worship—but drawing us into Life?
If worship is participation in the Life of God, how might that change the way we pray, sing, listen, and live?
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ,You do not force us toward You,but lovingly call us into Your Life.Open our hearts to recognize Your presence. T
each us to worship not only with words, but with our whole lives.
Draw us out of fear, distraction, and indifference, and lead us into communion with the Father, through the Holy Spirit.
May our mindset, our focus be clear, our hearts attentive, and our lives shaped by Your Love.
For You are holy, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
