Homo Deus? Becoming More Than Human… or Less?
In recent years, there has been growing conversation about the future of humanity. Some speak of a coming reality where human beings, through technology, may transcend their limits—extending life, enhancing the mind, even reshaping what it means to be human. This vision is often called “Homo Deus”—humanity becoming “god-like.” At first glance, this may sound bold, even hopeful. Who would not want to overcome disease, suffering, and limitation? And yet, the question before us is not simply: What can we become? But rather: How are we meant to become fully human?
The desire to go beyond our limits is not new- I always wanted to be an NHL goalie and a superhero! From the beginning, humanity has longed for life, knowledge, and transcendence. In fact, Holy Scripture tells us that we are made for communion with God.
We are not meant to remain as we are. But the path matters. There is the Way of becoming more… and there is a path of losing ourselves.
The vision these days often assumes: we become like gods by what we can do. Through knowledge, control, and technological power.
But the Christian vision is radically different. The Church, from the beginning, has spoken of theosis—becoming “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). Not by power but by God’s grace- the uncreated energies of God. Not by control-but by communion.
In Christ Jesus, we see the meaning of being fully human—and truly united to God. He does not grasp at power. He gives Himself.
He does not dominate. He offers. And in Him, humanity is not discarded or upgraded— but fulfilled. This is why the Church does not speak of becoming gods by nature, but of becoming godlike by participation in Christ’s Life.
Technology itself is not the problem. Medicine, knowledge, and human creativity can be good and even life-giving. But when we begin to believe that: we can define ourselves completely, we can overcome death by our own means, we can become “more” without God
then a shift begins. We move from receiving Life…to trying to manufacture a longer existence on my own terms. And in doing so, we risk becoming not more human—but less.
The Life in Christ offers a different vision. We are not dragged upward by force. We are not engineered into something new. We are drawn. Drawn into the Life of God. Drawn into communion. Drawn into transformation through Christ. This is not less than the vision of Homo Deus, this is far greater! Why? Because He does not simply extend life—He transfigures existence/life to Life. To become fully human is not to escape our humanity but be healed, restored, and filled with the Life of God. The Saints show us this path: humility instead of control, love instead of domination, communion instead of isolation – this is the true ascent.
The world may ask: “How far can we go?” The Church asks: “Into Whom are we being drawn?” Not into power. Not into self-creation. But into Christ. And there, we do not become less human. We become what and who and Whose we were always meant to be.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the true Life of humanity. Guard us from the illusion of becoming more by our own power. Draw us into Your Life, that we may become fully human—in You, and through You. Amen.
